TRACKBIKE PROJECT 2003
Posted By CrudMop 11:11:00 AM

Thought I'd post up a few pics of my current project, and where I am at so far...I haven't actually worked on it in a couple of months, but I am really starting to fiend for the warm weather and can't wait to get her done

At the end of the summer I decided that it was time for a dedicated trackbike - started looking on ebay to get an idea of how much it would cost, what bikes had a lot of available parts, etc. I decided on an f4i (I previously had one and liked the ride - lots of available parts with multiple years of sale for this model), and started my search. About 1 month later I had all of the parts necessary to put together a full rolling bike (at a cost of about $2500 total).

Here's the first shot of the garage - hadn't dawned on me just how much work might be involved

Strangely enough, it moved forward quite quickly - the first day I had the motor installed, swingarm, forks, clipons etc. Took about 2 hours to get to this point, and then had to stop once I realized there were more parts to be had (nuts, bolts, clutch cable guideplate, rear rim spacers, etc - small crap)

Well, I had a choice now - either to suck it up, and order the parts from Honda, or rummage for bolts that were similar to the proper ones. I wanted to do it right, so I went down to my local dealer and ordered up the parts. Man, what a mistake. It is absolutely INSANE what Honda will charge. The pile of nuts and bolts cost me just about the same as the frame! I was pissed. What can you do. Hindsight. From now on, it's makeshift nuts and bolts. Got a new set of 208s on ebay, mounted em up, and got the rear rim on. Mounted the plastics to get them fit correctly, windscreen, etc.

Unfortunately, the front rim had no valve - shot back down to Honda, who was nice enough to give one to me for free. Yeah. Thanks a lot.
Pulled the plastics back off, shot the paint with Krylon Satin Black. After about 8 coats it started looking pretty good. The next shots were taken at about coat #4, mounted em up to see how they were looking so far.

What's left? Gotta sand and shoot the tank - figure out an electrical issue (think it has to do with the lean angle sensor) - gave up when it started getting cold, once the weather warms up a little I'll get my sad ass back out there to finish up. I'll have some more recent pics once I get it all completely done.

Total time - maybe, 20 hours if you add it all up from crates to it's current form. Can't wait to get it out there and see how she runs

Stufff I'd like to do - new rearsets, new can, pcIII. We'll see where I go from there
